Up and Up

Today I am feeling like Saoirse is very small because she is not feeling well and very much depending on me, but I keep thinking about how big she is getting and how quickly. There is something about the kids in the oncology department that has always struck a chord with me. No matter the child or their diagnosis, they always look older than they are. I have found myself thinking about how old a child might be, only to find out that he or she is much younger. It seems like Saoirse has been growing up faster than ever. Her expressions seem to be so far beyond her years, and she seems to have life pretty figured out for now. I've been working on trying to capture some of her more "big girl" moments, and sometimes the pictures surprise even me. One of the doctors at sloan made the comment that many of the kids she sees are more mature because the spend so much time in an adult dominated world. That could be the key to their mature faces, or it could be the bald heads.

So in an effort to regain my baby's babyhood, I leave you with some bubbles!

  1. I totally agree! My mom often thought the same when I was being treated. I think it's becuase we're forced to face situations far more complex than others at that age. It's a whole different world.
    I wish you the best!

  2. I just discovered you on CNN & I have to say this really hits close to home for me. My beautiful niece (2 1/2) was diagnosed with Acute lymphoblastic leukemia at the beginning of August & she is in the 3rd stage of chemotherapy at the moment (she too has no hair anymore). It's been trying on all of us, but knowing we're not alone has helped a lot. Thank you for sharing your story with us. I wish you both only the best. Your daughter is an angel. She will be in my prayers.

    Best,
    David

  4. My little girl has been in and out of the hospital with kidney troubles for months now. No one seems to know why. The uncertainty of life in this situation is just as bad as the never-ending bills. I try to work in between her pain attacks and emergency room visits, but it gets harder and harder. I can only donate $1 to your little girl, but I hope 999,999 others find it in their hearts to do the same. ((huggs))

  6. This is the first time I've read your blog, but the second time I have read about your family's story. I am truly inspired and wish I could do more than send my prayers your way. I love that Saoirse translates into "freedom" in Gaelic, and I hope and pray that some day she will be free from this disease. She is a beautiful baby girl. Good luck and hopeful thoughts your way from Kansas City, MO!

  7. Like the other comments, I discovered your story on CNN earlier today. My heart broke into a million pieces. You and your husband have my utmost admiration for how you are dealing with your personal and financial struggles. You also have my heart and my prayers. I cannot imagine walking in your shoes. My heart aches for you, and I cannot get your family off my mind. May the God of peace comfort your family, and continue to strengthen you as you continue to walk down this hard path.

  9. I've been following a Caring Bridge Blog for Braden Hofen (http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/bradenh) for months now. Your story is very similar. As far as I know, Deliece has started a foundation for her son and she knows a lot of people and has lots of resources. Your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

  10. your story has truly touched me. I too found your story on CNN.com I cant imagine what you are going through as a family, but I am so glad your little girl has such loving and supportive parents. As a father of two little ones I dont know how I would cope. Your whole family is an inspiration - you are in my prayers!
Do you have a way people can donate to you to help with costs? My wife and I would love to send you something to help during the holiday season. Please let me know how we can do that. Do you have a mailing address?

  11. I read your story on CNN and want you to know that you have support in New York. If you need a place to sleep, sit in quiet and just be - please let me know. I have some wonderful psycologist friends at Memorial who work with patients with this awful disease and I would be happy to put you directly in touch with them. In the meantime I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

  13. I just prayed to the Lord for your beautiful daughter. I know He never leaves unanswered prayers. Maybe you wont understand this right now but God Loves her so much and HE is really really close to her. I offer this pain of little Saoirse to Him.

    God Bless you all!

  14. I also found your blog thru CNN's story after recognizing the headline from their previous report about your family several weeks ago. My heart broke hearing of your dual diagnosis'. They say that God only gives us what we can handle. If that's true, then you are so much stronger than you know, my dear. I pray for a full recovery for both you & your little girl, as well as strength for your husband to help you both through it all. Positive thoughts and energy to your family <3

  18. Hello, I too like many, saw your story on CNN, and want to extend my love out to you and let you know that your family will be in my prayers. We may have never met, and we may never meet in person, but I know the fear that cancer can put in your life and the strain it takes, but know you are not alone, when you need strength or someone to hear you, lean on the world of people and God, we are here always. xoxo
